“Limbic Resonance” By Amanda Sage
If we take a look at history from the cave paintings to Egyptian art, the classical period and modernism to contemporary art we can see something very exciting indeed! Is art our mirror reflecting our state of consciousness, our awareness?
What started out being withdrawn, extremely simple and vague transformed into something naturally human and imaginistic. Art transformed slowly from out-sider perspectives to subjective and individual perspectives, from deeply valued academic concepts to individualistic stylization, from the artists’ perception or vision from objectivity to unity with nature, consciousness and "oneness". As our understanding of the world changes, inevitably our art does too. Is this simply a reflection of the times or could it in fact show us our level of consciousness?
Art, especially in a collective sense, can perhaps shed light on the state of consciousness or awareness of the individual as well as the society. More and more artists are arising in this era; in fact there are more artists today than there ever were in all of history! What is interesting is the inclination of artists depicting "oneness," in which the subject is connected and one with all. If art truly does reflect our level of consciousness as a human species, where are we headed? How much further can the boundaries of art be pushed and is art showing the transformation of human consciousness? Hopefully, this will get your gears going and if you like the graphic above and would like to see more of the current shift in art try searching; Visionary Artists, Alex Grey, Andrew Annenberg, Garret Moore and so on.
